I seem to remember that W4KFC sometimes might have deserved a 598, Vic's note
being slightly "unique".... I heard rumors that he had a capacitor across the
bug's leads....can any of you sage PVRCers substantiate this?

A small refinement, with credit to W9LT (or at least he showed it to me).
Rig a short "tiller" of fairly strong aluminum tubing about 3 feet long,
with one end attached to the boom, perpendicular to it and directly under
the tram wire. Attach another pulley to the "tiller", also riding on the
tram line. That way, the beam being raised can't rotate in the horizontal
plane, nor can it rotate around the axis of the boom. Takes all the
excitement out of getting the ends of the elements past the guy wires.

I wonder whether there is anyone who knows what happened to V.C. Harvey
Brain, VQ9HB? I saw a letter from him about five ot six years ago, so I know
that he was still alive then and still living in the Seychelles. He would be
in his mid-eighties by now.

Please don't start giving points for USA to USA QSOs - that would
destroy the most unique feature of the WPX contest, the
comptition for the dr. Bafoofnik Trophy, awarded to the biggest
zero point score. I think I currently hold the #2 all time score in
that competition, with my 124/111 in the 1994 SSB test. Numero
uno, of course, is held by the good dr. himself, with a 200+ QSO
effort a few years back.
But if it must be done, do it right and award points based on ITU
Regions: for example 1 point for same region, 2 points outside
your region. No distinction for continents, countries etc. It
would be nice to have one contest where the winner would not
automatically come from northern South America or northern
Africa.

Dunno Chris - I haven't heard a thing about him in years. I was VQ9AR
in the Seychelles in 1967 and knew Harvey then - was out there when
Don Miller was poking around those parts - know Don quite well also -
or at least as well as most knew him. BTW I was also VP5AR so that
was a tongue in cheek comment obviously. Harvey was pretty well up in
years when I last saw him so he must be in his 80's by now at least.

Subject: RECEPTION PROBLEMS ON THE LOW BANDS
Message-ID: <199606200956.GAA10566@ax.ibase.br>
Dear friends,
I am trying to find a solution for my reception on the low bands. Most
stations can hear me but I only can hear powerful stations. My station includes
a butternut HF2V, Kenwood TS850 and an AL-80B amplifier.
This last weekend I tried the All Asian DX Contest (single band 40 meters). BIG
MESS! Many japoneses calling me but I couldn't recognize the calls. I am
getting sick of these things.
I read the Low Band DX Book by John Devoldere (many times). However I found
good solutions for those people who live in a farm but my reality is a very
limited room for antennas.
I have an Alpha Delta SWL-DX reception antenna but I haven't raised yet because
I have a feeling that it doesn't work very well (very short).
Do you have any suggestions? A miracle (HI!)? Do you think that a dipole could
be a better antenna for reception? Or a Long Wire (a short one of course)? HELP
ME!
Thank you in advance fellows,
Carlos - PY1CAS

ps. I am 28 years-old, this way I will complete the 5BWAS and 5BDXCC with 200
years (next life)!
