I think that the way to do this would be to replace the pots that are used
for the directional indicators on both the RTS and Ringrotors with optical
encoders. Then it would be a fairly simple matter to design an embedded
microprocessor, like a PIC (Micro-Chip), to count pulses and display the
true direction of every antenna on the tower. Limit stops could even be
coded to avoid trashing the feedlines and warn the operator that he needs
to swing the antenna the other direction.
A really advanced version could allow someone with, say a 4 stack of
yagis, to have them all pointed in different directions and with the push
of a switch, they would all swing to EU or JA or whatever preset was
designed in. It would be very cool to have a BIG lighted pushbutton on the
rotor control box marked "SYNCHRONIZE!" !!
The beauty of doing it this way is that one of the most troublesome
components is eliminated, namely the pot with it's wiper-arm.
There are literally hundreds of features and specific configurations that
could be handled.

All contesters and DXers, young and old, beginners and oldtimers, are
welcome to the annual W3LPL Open House and PVRC/NCDXA joint meeting in
Glenwood, MD on Saturday June 15th from noon to 6:00 pm.
CJ's Beef Barn will arrive at noon with an excellent BBQ lunch for
everyone who wishes to join in! They will be serving lunch until 3:00 pm.
Lunch will be $12.00 for all you can eat:

NCDXA is providing a 1/2 keg of beer and soft drinks for all.

Directions from I-95:
Take Rt 32 West (Exit 38B) west towards Columbia and Clarksville.
Follow Rt 32 for 13 miles and turn left at the 1st traffic signal,
Burntwoods Rd. Follow Burntwoods Rd for 1.7 miles and turn right on Hobbs
Rd. Park on the grass in front of the towers.
Directions from Montgomery County.
Take Rt 97 (Georgia Av) north through Olney and Sunshine and cross the
Patuxent River into Howard county. Five miles into Howard Co, turn right
onto Burntwoods Rd. Follow Burntwoods for one mile and turn left on Hobbs
Road.
Directions from I-70:
Take I-70 West to Route 32 (Exit 80). At the bottom of the exit ramp,
turn left onto Rt 32 South towards Clarksville. After 1/2 mile, turn
right at the first traffic signal onto Rt 144. Follow Rt 144 for three
miles and turn left onto McKendree Rd (church on left). Follow McKendree
for 1.5 miles and take the second left onto Hobbs Rd. W3LPL is one mile
ahead on top of the hill.

Just as a matter of interest, the rumor going around Visalia was that the
Kenwood amateur radio division had lost $5 million in 1995, and that they
were pulling their inside-the-cover ads in both CQ and QST. The sales of
the 870 have reportedly been well below what was expected.
I'm still content with my three TS-830's and have seen no need to
upgrade. Too bad they spent so much R & D yen on bells and whistles
nobody needs!

Vy interesting, Kenwood's letter.
What I fear is governmental action (like removal of bands from hams) which
will so anger a segment of the radio users that they will become frequency
outlaws and operate anywhere they want. Beyond that, which is a kind of
"Freemen's net," if you will (i.e., the Montana guys), is the really angry
who may use their considerable knowledge and gear to muck up all kinds of
radio/tv bands and users. Twenty or thirty permanently angry folks,
geographically spread and savy, could bring air to ground communication to
a halt, and this is only an example.
PLEASE note that I am NOT advocating these actions, but someone has to say
these fears out loud so that we can come to terms with the dangers.

It mounts on ONE leg of the tower...NOT across the face of the tower. To
me this seems REAL weak for the winds we have in Nevada ( 70+Mph several
times a year!). It supports a TH7DXX and a TailTwister.
I will be modifying mine this year.

Hi,
I have seen some intersting comments on what it might take to win
the WRTC. There is one thing I hope will not be a factor. Evidently,
last time around there were a number of packet spots put out which looked
something like this:
"To All: Hey guys, W1A on 14.2222 is K1XYZ and K0ABC! Let's all work them!"
The identity of the operators was not intentionally given away by the
contestants, but due to simple voice recognition on the part of their
friends. I don't know if it had a real effect on the final outcome, but
it's occurrence was mentioned in a least one publication I've seen.
I would encourage all contesters on this group to avoid putting out any
spots like that, as it could give an unfair advantage to the U.S. ops.
I'm sure that the U.S. contestants would also agree with this request.
No one wants to win if there is a chance that their victory could be
tainted by something totally out of their control.
