Hello, everyone --
Many of you know that there is a new contesting magazine out called CQ
Contest. It is edited by Bob Cox, K3EST, and has many interesting articles
and contributing editors that are of interest to anyone interested in
competitive operating (this includes breaking DX as well as contest pileups).
At Visalia and Dayton this year, I was surprised at the number of
interested amateurs that hadn't seen it so I had the publisher send me a
number of copies. I am offering them to you FOR FREE. If you'd like a
complimentary copy of CQ Contest magazine, send me your postal address and
I'll make sure you get one. You can't lose.
BTW, my column "Up The Tower" appears in every other issue. This isn't
exactly a paid political announcement but I do have a connection to the
magazine.

THESE SCORES ARE NOT OFFICIAL!!! I CANNOT ACCEPT ANY LOGS!!!!!
PLEASE SEND ALL YOUR LOGS TO THE ADDRESS IN CQ MAGAZINE!!
PLEASE READ THIS!! I cannot get your scores if you send them as an
attached file to your mail. It takes me over 5 minutes just to do one
score that way. If you do not have the time to type your score into the
text of your email, I do not have the time to post it. I have stated this
every contest for over a year and people keep doing it. Also scores that
are sent in without being added up will not be posted. It is a lot easier
for you to add one score up than for me to do a 100.
The address for the 3830 reflector is 3830@akorn.net!! Maybe someone can
post on here how to subscibe to it. I am not sure and do not want to put
out any bad information.
Also as I stated in my post before the contest, I cannot do attached
files. You need to send it in the form of email. Also please state your
full class on it, not just Single OP. If you do you go into the unlimited
class.
Please do not send me SSB scores. The Final Posting has been made on that
one.

The most recent CQ Contest Magazine has two interesting articles
on broken calls. Of particular interest was the list of commonly
broken calls on which I was near the top (W2HC instead of W2SC).
This was part of a broader trend of H's mistaken for S's. I wonder
how many WP2ASW's are in the log from my operation in the CW WPX.
It partially confirms a theory I had regarding why I get so many
dupes the second day. Usually the first day is higher rate and
typically higher CW speed than the second. I have often wondered
if my call is more often miscopied on the first day resulting in
more dupes on Sunday. Similarly, I have wondered if sending too fast
results in the receiving station not fully copying their OWN call
sign when I send it and thereby not correcting me if I copy it wrong.
In listening to other operators, some prominent stations (K1AR in
particular) go very fast while other excellent ops go much slower.
Granted K1AR is a very recognizable call and he can copy better than
me (I am a CW slug) but I wonder how fast people think is appropriate
in a contest. My CT speed is usally 36-42 in DX contests and mid
twenties in the SS.
To switch threads, I am firmly in favor of 36 vs. 30 hours in the
WPX. I agree with N6TJ in that contests are for operating and it is
ridiculous to have to walk away from the radio when there are
contacts to be made. If the rules are such that it is not fun for
the whole time period, then change the rules. I would support points
for in country contacts and virtually any thing else that would
enhance the activity and competition. I don't see how increasing
off time contributes to the enjoyment of contesting. Spending part
of a contest weekend watching the Indy 500 is just plain dumb.

Gang:
Here's my two cents worth--as the provider of instructions and guidance to
more than 23,500 currently-accredited ARRL VEs.
As others have pointed out, VEs must accept any and all Physician's
Certifications presented to them at face value--so long as the applicant has
met all other written element requirements for the desired upgrade, and so
long as the applicant can show that he/she has met the minimal 5 WPM Morse
code requirement.
No VE can choose not to sign the Form 610--in this example. If a VE does
not sign the Form 610 or issue CSCE credit, no VEC or FCC policy exists to
protect them. That VE opens him/herself up to possible legal suit from the
applicant based upon the fact that the failure to sign the form in that
applicant's situation was discriminatory, with such action not being
supported by any rules or policies.
If a VE feels that signing these types of forms violates his/her principles,
then the VE should resign from that VEC program before the fact--rather than
leave him/herself open to possible legal action.
If ARRL VEs have questions or concerns regarding any application, we always
instruct them to raise these items to us after the test session--normally
including any written notes, letters or comments with the specific test
documents. In the case of a Physician's Certification that appears
questionable, the VEs are instructed to provide a letter which is to be sent
to the FCC (we can forward it, or the VEs can send it directly to FCC
Gettysburg) which identifies the issues that bring into question the merits
of the Physician's Certification. For information to be of use to the FCC,
it must be first hand (not hearsay, or second hand/third party) and factual.
The FCC does want to investigate cases of abuse. However, they currently
only review questionable applications that are brought to their attention
(if the details in the letter they receive compels to them investigate).
The FCC does not as a matter of routine review every application that
includes a Physician's Certification. Not every Physician's Certification
is questionable.
VEs should not be put in (or should not enter into) a position of debating
an application's merits. After all, VEs already have more than enough
routine things to do at testing sessions. We implore VEs to try to stay out
of confrontations--leaving as many of those matters as possible to be
handled at the VEC. We (at the ARRL/VEC) will take the responsibility of
being in the hot seat on such matters, as necessary...

Yes, after an acquaintence obtained his Genral, Advanced and Amateur Extra

Unfortunately, I must admit I know a local amateur who lost an arm either in
an accident or due to illness (he's a diabetic). He knows DX, can climb
towers,
drive a car, run a business, but he can't copy CW past 13 wpm.
However, he CAN have an extra class license .....

In the July/August 1996 CQ Contest magazine Douglas Zwiebel has an
article called "A Look Inside Computer Log Checking". On page 7 under "How
Do N Calls Occur?" he wrote the following....
"There are several ways N calls are generated. Let's take a closer
look at these. The first way, and one which nobody wants to happen, is that
you log a callsign you knowingly never worked. This kind of logging can
either be classified as lazy and sloppy, or as cheating-depending on your
degree of generosity/cynicism."
Would some contestors REALLY not consider this cheating? In the past
year as I've slowly started getting my feet (actually just my toes) wet in
contesting, I've been amazed/amused/digusted at how SOME contestors are
willing to exploit gray areas and loopholes, but this is ridculous!

Subject: Two Radios/One Tower
Message-ID: <n1377972662.9844@mail.ssec.wisc.edu>
For a while now, I've been thinking about the best way to design the
antenna control system for using two radios for single operator contests
with my simple one-tower system. I'd be interested in hearing how others
have solved the problem.
I think the situation is fairly typical of smaller contest stations, where
there isn't room to have a lot of separate antennas. To make effective use
of the two radios, it has to be possible to connect any antenna to either
radio. It must be possible to connect single antenna (typically the
tribander)
to either radio, though not simultaneously. In addition, it should be
possible to listen either on the selected transmitting antenna or on one of a
number of separate receiving antenna with either or both radios.
I use two amplifiers, but let's not worry about switching between
them for now. Only one radio transmits at a time, of course.
One mode of operation is to have the radios on two different
bands, but use them one at a time. At the flip of a single switch (or
stepping on a foot switch), the operator switches to the other radio.
EVERYTHING has to switch, including antenna configuration. Obviously, there
has to be the usual mike/keyer/headphone switching box, but what I'm
interested in here is the antenna switching.
With the provision for separate receiving antennas, the secondary
station can receive while the primary one is transmitting, for "true"
two-radio operation. (With bandpass filters, of course.) It is important
that the secondary radio can transmit on any of the transmitting antennas,
though. When the primary radio is selected, the secondary one receives on
a separate receiving antenna. When the secondary radio is selected,
however, it can receive either on the rx antenna or the transmitting
antenna. So, for example, if you can't quite copy something on the
second radio's receiving antenna you can just step on a foot switch and
listen on the transmitting antenna. (Assuming the primary radio isn't
transmitting.)
There must be some sort of sequencing and interlocks to prevent hot-
switching of relays if the operator tries to switch radios while one
of them is transmitting. (It's guaranteed to happen!)
Another desirable feature is the capability to switch bands on either
radio instantly. Changing bands would switch to a previously selected
antenna configuration. This is useful even with a single radio, if
it has a "band data" output that can tell the control system which band
is selected. If a computer controls the radio, changing bands in the
logging program automatically gets the antennas configured for the new
band.
If everything is done right, the system should even be useful for multi-
single contests. But the real goal here is to allow one operator to make
optimum use of two radios.
I'd welcome any ideas on the subject. If we can come up with a good
design, I think a lot of contesters could make use of it. Please email
responses directly to me, and I'll summarize.

Scott K9MA
