Hi contesters ! !
I bought FT 1000 MP during last Dayton Hamvention. The rig is nice and on
operating position now. I'm feeling problems with Heil phones, that needs
aparently high volume position to get good sound... When using FT 1000 MP plus
HS-5 from Kenwood, all work FB FB, with AF gain button around 9 o'clock. Turn
to Heil, and need to adjust volume button to 1 or 2 o'clock! Is that OK, or
need I to make any adjustment?
By the way, can I use old FL 2000 B (no time to buy AL-811 during Hamvention)
with FT 1000 MP without preocupation? Any advice about this work situation?

I happened to have called ETO two weeks ago and talked with Ray about some
problems I was having with my amplifier. My main concern was getting it
scheduled for a repair visit. He told me that, at that time, there was a 6
week backlog for repairs. He explained that this was partially caused by the
fact that all new equipment needed to be tested there before it shipped and
this caused some delays.
Since I have an older amp (76PA) I requested the latest literature and price
lists. (I figured maybe it was time to replace it and worry about repairs
later - 6 to 8 weeks seems like a long time to go without an amp!) He
proceeded to make a point to tell me that the prices on the list would only be
good until June 12, 1996, and that was also mentioned on the price list. I
asked him if this meant that there would be increase after that date. He
replied that he wasn't indicating anything and went on to repeat the original
information.
Also, I asked about the current delivery schedule. He provided the following
information:
Model Backlog
87A 2 months
89 1.5 months
91B 3 months
It seems to me that either production is down or business is booming.
I just thought I would pass this information along, for whatever it is worth.
I offer no speculation as to the original "rumor" but I was left with the
feeling that there *may* be a future price increase. Who really knows....

I was afraid this could happen, remember, ETO merged with
another firm up in New England several months ago, an outfit
building some sort of power scientific apparatus. Guess they
want the ETO technology to concentrate on that business. Evidently,
as with Kenwood, with the propogation gods turned away, there
isn't a lot of bussiness these days selling into the amateur
radio market.

matches. The driven elements will be will be mounted on a plate and held
with U-bolts. I will
need to insulate the outside using tubing, and a rod to connect the element
halves.
I have an AIN Plastics catalog that explains each of the plastics
properties, but still
unsure of what to use. Any suggestions?

We contesters consider ourselves a notch above the average "shack-on-a-belt"
crowd.
However, some of the commotion about the proposal to consider transfer of
the 2M and 70cm bands to the satellite service seem to have brought out the
worst in some of us.
"Whazzat you say? THe Feds gonna take away summa our bands? Gimme the Email
address of that %&($(%$ and I'll give him a piece of my mind. Mebbe I'll get
a couple hunnert of the boys to do likewise. Yeah...I'll show the %^%$%s in
DC where they can get off. Mess with MY bands, will they?"
Just imagine what frame of mind any of the movers and shakers will be in
when they get a few hundred (or more!) Emails from really irate hams who have
not yet learned the discipline to read what they typed before they hit the
"send" key. I'm sure they'll be *real* impressed with us all.
Before you make things worse by getting all liquored up and firing off Emails
to the Secretary of State, the Governor, the President, and whoever else you
can get an Email address for, think how you'd feel if some very small minority
group started bombarding your place of business (or you personally) with
a load of Email. May I humbly suggest that you contact the ARRL (or whoever
else you think speaks for amateur radio) and voice your concerns and ask for
guidance on how you can help *before* you contribute to the image most
policy makers have of us.
Yeah, I know, there are 700,000 of us. But that makes about 3 in every 1000
Americans. You wanna talk minority?
And do you think the people who would like to gain access to a few more MHz
would have much problem making us look even worse in the eyes of the policy-
makers, given the PR muscle they probably have at their disposal?
Let's all calm down a bit...

Steve, KC2X, rightly takes me to task for words stronger than needed!
No one gets more steamed than me when I can't get the straight skinny
on delivery, price, support, performance, etc.
And this and similar reflectors are exactly the right place to express
disappointment if experienced.
Mergers do take a long time between announcement of agreement and the
closing, and there is no end of frustration caused by the concern that
somehow a slip of the lip will undo the deal or result in litigation.
I don't like that either, and I like it better when outfits can be
forthcoming with as much information as they can.
The sum of several postings pushed my empathetic hot button, and the
mike gain here was cranked up a bit too high!

Time as an argument against receiving logs via e-mail I can possibly =
understand. But not due to expense...
The going rate for Internet connect time around here is in the $20 for =
20 hours category. $50 for unlimited time. You could handle a LOT of =
logs at 28.8 Kb and that much time.
If CQ Magazine is serious about the quality of their contests, they =
should be able to support the 2 or 3 months of 'high' connect time that =
would be necessary to support Internet submissions. Especially given =
the much higher level of checking that would be possible with electronic =
logs.
I have entered a number of International contests just because there =
were e-mail submissions. It's easy, cheap, and shows some support of =
the contest. ALL contests should do whatever they can to support this.
N8BJQ and the WPX Committee do a great job of accepting Internet logs. =
It can be done!

Three comments on the mail I have gotten on receiving logs via internet...
1. The CQ Rules state there must be a paper log for every CQ contest.
If I cut this down to a summary sheet and a dup sheet plus a
diskette I can verify to CQ that I have a paper log.
I only look at the actual log upon exception.
2. The expense on my part for E-mailed logs is that I must print the
summary and the dup list or in some cases generate the dup
list from the .BIN. I tie up my hard drive plus if I get 1,300
logs this way then I run thru 1,300 summary sheets and at least 1,300 more
sheets for dup. This is about $25 at office depot, but also uses a
complete drum for my laser at about $85. I have unlimited
internet so that is not a concern. I use the computer for all my
business E-mail also. I don't want an important message lost in a sea of logs.
3. Even more important the time is doubled for each log as I must
print each and also enter it (or write a program to enter the
info.) This would add another 100 hours (2 1/2 weeks)
pushing the total time spent past 1,100 hours.
Please remember that CQ Magazine only sponsors the contests...All of the
contest checkers are VOLUNTEERS! 1,100 hours is time away from family ,
contesting et al!
I have picked up several valuable ideas but until I can get by the three
points listed I will continue to only accept logs via mail.

Many thanks for the replies to my message. I received
many messages indicating they had received an acknowledgement
including a message from Steve N8BJQ. Steve message indicated
he had already sent me an acknowledgement - which I didn't
get.
Not that I had a record setting score, but I wanted to make
sure N8BJQ got the log ok. The lost reply from Steve is the
very reason why I wanted to make sure I had an acknowledgement
for the long I sent in.
