Thanks to all who replied to my request for help with the general
class cw test. I passed and am now a general class operator. My
question is what's the best why to do casual ssb on 20 meters. I have
put up an r7 (actually an r7000) and have had little luck making any
contacts. I checked my rig and antenna and all seems fine. Localls
hear me just fine. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

First, I'd like to point out that all the top US contenders operate from
'propagationally challenged' locales. Thus, we have an inherent advantage
since there is more time to practice beer drinking. For those of you
interested in joining this year's contest - be forewarned! The competition
is brutal!!!
I ran across a 1994 photo of the top US contenders (and wannabees NI8L,
WX9E, and WW1M) in the heat of battle. Felipe's ranking n0bsh as the top
contender is on the mark since Mike is the only one drinking two beers at
a time. I posted a censored version of the photo

I'd suspect part of the reason that (real close in?) locals hear you
fine,
yet others may not is due to the low angle of radiation from your vertical
and
the fact that energy is radiated equally in all directions from this
antenna. I've
experienced the same thing with my 80-meter 1/4-wave vertical--I can work
Europe barefoot with it, yet "locals" (East coast-Midwest) folks don't seem
to know I'm even there at times! Low angle gets me into somewhat long-haul
(Europe) QSOs, and works against "local" ( Eastern US) communications.
One (admittedly simplistic), explanation.

After reading the MLA-2500B article in QST (well done, a tad lite on detail
w/o the info contained in the .zip file), I have found myself bitten by the
"Go Build Something" bug. A nice amp project kind of tickles my fancy.
Question:
Where can I find a good diagram for a killer amp? Maybe using a pair of
4CX800's like in the article. The constant impedance input really appeals
to me.
