I like KG4W's ideas for the usage of a reducer to adapt the 3/4" hardline to
a PL259....I am uncomfortable with filing the center conductor, however.
The 3/4" hardline we have worked with has a center conductor that is aluminum
with a copper cladding. The copper is not thick, and if you should knick it
the strength of the central aluminum conductor is shot...it snaps off the
first time it is bumped. We have used some of this stuff, too....we adapted
the center conductor to PL259 size by getting some tubing at a modeling shop
and nesting it first over the harline center conductor. We down sized it like
you would elements of a yagi....til we got to the smaller size the PL259
wants to see. If you stop at the size which is the same as the PL259's tip
you then can run a piece of wire thru it and the tip.
That center conductor's large diameter has lead us to use the 1/2" stuff
versus the 3/4"....the fuss over the center conductor just ain't worth the
hassle....we are working at HF and already have seen a big gain by switching
from RG-# up to a hardline....the difference between the 1/2 and 3/4 is more
than offset when you look at the hassles in working with the 3/4"es center
conductor.

ps: N2NU brought up the point that if a 1/2" X 1/2" barrel or double female
compression inline union was available I could get two for the price of one
on my "new" fitting design. Rather than trashing the unused half of the
fitting....alas the Home Depot I was in only had the 1/2 X 3/8 reducer and
no 1/2 X 1/2. Good point! That would cut the cost of the fitting by over a
buck!

Please I am encouraging all the OTs out there to PLEASE share there early
experiences with us "new" guys.
Unlike Danny I DID discover girls etc right about the time I saw my first
ham stations and missed all of this. I started with Drake Twins and made
Extra in 1 year. But did it at age 34. Kinda going on the fast track from
Novice station to super station I know I am missing something.
But still I loved my buddy Jimmys HW-16 that he had in his closet and Random
wire antenna from his room to the garage. But then there was Peggy the
little blonde with those tuquoise blue eyes...........
