I had another solution for the DX window, I didn't work any W station in
it. Did get some nice EU here and there. Where was west coast?? NK7U was
about it. For everyone's information, southeast had very bad storms Friday
night. I'm sure FRC felt sri for us...

at the risk of sounding ignorant i am hoping someone can help a "new to
the topband" contester answer a few questions...grandma always said the
only stupid question is the one that never gets asked so here goes...
rig is a ts430s with 250hz filter and a extra 8 pole filter in the
w7ozi(?) scheme from irc( pse dont start that thread again...these worked
great but then again i bought them in '92 so perhaps things did change)
running 100w to a alpha delta 1/4 sloper sloped fridaynight ne and sat
nite s ( top abt 40'high) i can hear some dx (ok the carribean) a few of
which heard me...vp9ad was boomin in and answered my first call...p49i
was so-so and i worked him after a few...p40wa was so-so and stuck with
me abt 10 minutes until we completed the ex...xe2/wa7uqy(?) was loud and
answered my first call...i want to hear more but also want to be heard
more... im looking at either or ewe or a beverage for rx...it appearsd
from all the articles that a ewe needs a preamp...what kind works best??
does a beverage have gain and directivity w/o a preamp?? for tx antenna i
am looking at roof mounting a vertical (thread last summer abt this but
never saw any details) will this work ?? want kind of
counterpoise/ground is used?? ballon kit sounds good but with powerlines
in front and back of my 75x150 lot is a little scary...as afar as noise
reduction goes will a dsp unit give me results and filtering or would a
anc-4 be better ( noise is only a slight problem depending on wx) replay

who says 9A3A/4U does not count for DXCC? It was my understanding that is
why they are signing 4U, and that UN authorized operations WOULD count. Did
I miss something?

Well, first neither beverages or EWEs have "gain". They all have LOSS, hi hi.
You have several choices to look at. If you have the room, the beverages
will always be better. I do not have the room, so I use three EWEs, one NE,
one S and one W. These EWEs worked fantastik, I could hear Eu just fine
during all that QRN this weekend. They heard RK2FWA, UA2DC, RU1A all s7-s9!!
I use the K2ZJ beverage boxes to hook up my EWEs. They are available both
with and without preamp, from ZJ Electronics. They contain a preamp, RF
clamping device so you can transmit near it, and bandpass filtering.
After trying the EWEs both with and without preamps, I believe that the
preamp is a requirement to hear all the DX that can be heard. You can either
use an un-amplified beverage box and locate the preamp inside on the
receiver, or you can use an amplified beverage box outside.
The amplified beverage boxes are a bit pricey though. And they have the
small disadvantage of not being able to turn the preamp off if needed.
The unamplified K2ZJ boxes are less costly, but you can make one also very
easily.

Yeah, but his problem is that they rotate separately, plus he's got a bunch
of other stuff to boot. Probably getting more interaction from the
boom of the 20 than anything else...should work fairly well when they are
lined up with each other. 12-15 feet is a good number for the separation
