Yes, Bill, I have another suggestion.
List every contest you can find on your schedule. This will put the few you
want to operate in the correct perspective.
" Gee, Honey, I COULD operate all of these contests, but, for you, I am
making this tremendous sacrifice . . ."
This is the kind of thinking that comes from 30 years as a salesman . . . I
think they call it a sales pitch.
Good luck.

Yes, I COULD (and did) try this technique. The response was simple,
straightforward and expected:
"It is obvious ham radio is more important than me and the children. If
you'd rather spend your time holed up in front of a radio....."
Like I said, I've given up trying.....if you hear me contesting, really
contesting, my wife is either having to work or I got so fed up with
the situation I just told her I didn't care.

Hi CONTESTERS...
Well, I'd LIKE to see the COMMENTS from individual guys (which usually
accompanies the score. I really like the "in depth" stuff which is
fun to read, often very entertaining, and sometimes even informative!
So (and you knew it was coming), here is my stuff:
KR2Q SINGLE OP-UNASSISTED-ALL BAND-LOW POWER-PART TIME (New Category?)
QTH: On the White Mountain (get it?) :-)
160 17 6 11
80 62 12 34
40 110 19 56

10 79 10 23
Sum 1039 101 309 ----> 1,179,980
OPERATING TIME: 33 hours
I HAD A G R E A T TIME!!!! And that's what counts (for me).
THE SAD SONGS (aka:excuse)
Pre-contest.....
1. My wife had patients on Saturday (booked in error), so I had to
attend to the kids (5 and 7). Planned a laid back effort.
2. Decided on Tuesday to try a hard effort in the time I did have.
3. No antennas up for 40 and/or 80...hurry up Doug!
4. Wife off Wednesday (me too), so plan a big effort to put up 80
wire and 402cd (in attic in original box for last 11 years).
5. Nothing meshes and Wednesday is gone with NO progress.
6. Thursday, at 3:30pm go to RS, buy some wire, make and put up an
80 inverted vee (with ropes, coax, etc.). Get done by sunset. Whew!
Take 402 out of attic and plan to put up "401CD" [note 1] on Friday.
7. Start at 3pm Friday...no chance...decide to put up HALF of the 401CD
(aka, vertical). By dinnertime, it's "up" with TWO radials and coax run
into the shack. I am on all bands with a real (sort of) antenna for
each band.
Contest....
1. Wife has an 8:00am patient. She's gone early.
2. I have to attend to the kids (5 and 7) most of Saturday. Wake 'em up
and get them showered and dressed and comb the hair. Prepare/serve 'em
breakfast. Do the same with lunch. Help 'em play, and break up fights.
Do a lot of back and forth between kids and rig...no chance to run.
3. Take OFF TIME (15 hours worth) mostly during DAYLIGHT HOURS. Start 'test
Friday (local) at 00z, go to bed at 07z, wake up at 10z. Partly operate,
partly help kids. Go to bed at 0845z. Set alarm for 10z, but never
hear it. Awakened by 2nd alarm clock (older daughter) who enters at 12z
and says the dog threw up...argh!. I just KNOW it's going to be a great
day.
4. Discover that a small vertical with 2 radials SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!! (duh)
5. Set goal of 1000 qso's and 1 million points. Break both before the end
of the 'test and feel very relaxed (euphoric?) thereafter. Had lots
and lots of FUN.
Note 1: When I realized that I didn't have time to assemble and put up
the entire 402cd, I decided to try just one element (rotating dipole).
I put out a message on the NE MegaCluster (100+ nodes typical) asking about
alterations necessary to match it. What a wonderful system; I got tons
of replies: a) Make it longer. b) Make it shorter. c) It will be just
right as is, don't do anything. d) MAKE the time, and put it all up.
e) don't worry about it, just use a tuner.
One of the replies came from W1JR, who used the term "401CD." I'd like
to give him the credit for this neat phraseology. I don't know if he
coined it, but I sure can't take any credit for it.
Hope everyone had a fun time operating. PLEASE send us BOTH your paper
logs AND your diskettes. I hate having to ask. Mark the outside of
the envelope as "SSB." You have 30 days.

Hi All.
I did not enter this year for WW SSB, but maybe will enter CW. This
stems from the fact that CW is only 1KC wide in bandwidth, which fits
together OK with other stations calling CQ test .5 KC away-I can live
with it-gotta love narrow filters...BUT and I mean BUT my head just
cannot deal with SSB stations trying to use this same spectrum plan.
This was a demonstration for all those complainers out there who say
that there isn't enough space on 20M. These contesters demonstrated that
you can actually have spacings as close as .2KC and live happy (did I
say HAPPY??!!) This was at it's brutally worst around 14.152, where
three stations were within .3KC for hours on end.
CW may be old or antiquated, but as far as filters go, it's the only
mode which we have the technology to employ filters good for 250Hz!!!
Let's see seomone try a 250Hz filter on SSB!!!! And you don't get
laryngitis!!!!! BUT....to each his own...cuz if everyone operated only
the CW test...we might need 100Hz filters??!!!!!
Gud luk, Gud Dx and Gud testing.
