I recently downgraded my station to an FT890AT. I'd like to put in
a decent effort in SS and the 160 contests, but am wondering
whether or not it's worth plowing $$$ into a CW filter for the '890,
or if the money would be better spent on some sort of external
digital filter.
Any suggestions?

After reading the various comments on the reflector, the putative reasons
for this change are relatively clear (at least to me).
* It probably is not a means to save magazine space. Using the
announcements in the latest (November) QST for the 10 and 160 contests
and comparing them to last years full rules, this years takes up 15 sq in
less space than last years or 0.17 page less.
[For those who care, a page is 8 x 10.75 in (yes it's like a 2x4, not
quite what you thought) or 86 sq in. For three columns t is 28.6666...
sq in per column]
* It probably is a means to make the contests more enticing to
newcomers. I agree with those who have said this is a good idea.
* To the extent that the -serious- contesters will have to pay $5 in
order to get the rules so that they can see just exactly what they can do
to gain an advantage over their competition by "pushing the envelop", it
is a source of funds for the ARRL. Many active contesters are life
members and no longer provide any direct funds to the League (except for
the interest on their LM payment which one hopes is invested in some
way). $5 here, $12?? for NCJ there, as the Congressmen say, pretty soon
it adds up to real money.
Having said that, if as it appears, the rules will be posted at the ARRL
Web site, they can be post well in advance of the magazine publication
date so that the contester's attorneys can look more closely for
loopholes. If 100% of all active contesters are on the Internet, the
loss of the detailed rules in QST will make absolutely no difference at
all, and the less active/new contesters will be well served by the new
format. They do not need to see all the detailed rules. And as Fred K3ZO
says, the League contest staff can spend their time correcting errors based
on old rules.

BTW if you really want to save space in QST, try eliminating the
outdated Section news 558 sq in or 6.5 pages (most [all??] of the SMs
send a timely bulletin to their members). Or how about 2 pages for a
small ARRL Board meeting. These are important to be available but they
could be put on the Web page and then downloaded in a print form that it
legible. That's 8.5 pages more advertising or more space for a better
CONTEST writeup from the staff that already does a good job with the
limited space they have.

K1VR: I do know that they changed the method of mounting
the capacitive hat. It is now (the last four years or so)
easier to mount and less likely to fall off.
