IARU Region 1 (Europe and Africa mostly) adopted rules several years ago for
European contests that encouraged people to avoid the lower 5-10 KHz of
80-40-20 CW (only) I think. This was not adopted by the IARU as a whole.

PS. Is contest QRM ever really a problem on CW for non-contesters, or is it
90%+ an issue for SSB contests? I know that sometimes the qrp and
county-hunter folks feel stepped on during the biggest CW contests, and I
suppose the digital folks that are creeping down the band are also looking
for more qrm-free space, but it seems like "joe ham" that gets annoyed is
mostly on 20M SSB and to a lesser extent on 75M SSB.
Maybe the solution for the tough problem on 20M SSB is to move the lower
limit for the USA phone band down to 14110 (and 7100, and 3700) ... There
aren't many Novice or Tech+ operators in the 80/40 Novice bands these days...

I have a TS-850S with the auto-tuner, and the AT gets used a lot when
driving the linear. The input circuit is fairly broadbanded, but it isn't
50 ohms on all bands from edge to edge. The AT makes it so. Works like a
charm.

Not a flame Tom.... your statement is accurate but in one way sad. There is
sometimes a spectrum usage problem. However, rather than rush to fill the
Novice bands with contesters today, maybe we should rush to fill them with
Novice/Technicians who might become constesters tomorrow. Where are the
contesters of tomorrow going to come from anyway. At this rate contesters
will go the way of the spark-gap.

I hope you guys are kidding about K1AR participation in the biggest
and best contests. He and his buddies have done more to raise our
consciousness and the level of competition in the contests than most
any others I can think of. Just think of life before computer logging.
I imagine that AR had at least something to do with our modern
conveniences. Anyway, I, for one, can hardly wait to see what is in
store for the future from John. So, John, keep up the good work and
don't fall for the sour grape routine.

Its no doubt the most boring contest is the ARRL, at least from DX side.

"The territory, to be named Nunavut,the Inuktitut(eskimo comminities)
word for "our land", covers 2m sq km of treeless tundra, an area bigger than
Germany, France, Sweden ans Spain combined. Its total population, however
will be a mere 23,000, about 85 per cent of them Inuit.
The Inuit homeland will be carved out of the present Northern
Territories as part of a 1993 land-claims settlement with ottawa. Under the
agreement, the federal government will pay about C$1.1bn (US$814bn) during 14
years to the Inuit trust fund. Canadian taxpayers will also foot the bill for
setting up the new territoty, estimated at C$212m, plus operating expenses at
C$77m a year after Nunavut is officialyy created on April 1, 1999".
I Guess you guys just have to pray the Quebec separatist win there will to

Not IARU worldwide, just IARU Region 1 (Europe, Africa, Middle East).
Most people in other IARU regions have no idea this has been done, and
anyway, IARU Region 1 recommendations are not binding on other IARU regions.

Hi John...boy we really have 'em fooled, don't we. They really think
that all those N2AA/K2GL wins (4 committee members), the N2RM wins, the

were 'by skill'. I hope they never look too closely at my still existing
USA QRP record. Boy oh boy John, you were right, they really are stupid.
And I bet that they also think the dozen or so trophies we sponsor actually
get paid for by us too! I wonder if Donovan ever realized that he didn't
start winning until W3ZZ got there?
