I may have the opportunity to operate portable in some domestic contest from
"out West" and while exploring the possibilities would like some opinions on
two issues:
(1) what state to operate from, and (2) practical *EFFECTIVE* antenna
configurations.
The station would be contained in a moderate-sized motor home, driven from
Las Vegas, NV or Hurricane, UT (my son-in-law, WA2JFK, and daughter live in
LV, and his folks with motor home in UT). My choice would be to operate from
UT since back East
that's always a rare one. The motor home has a 4kw Onan generator that feeds
off the motor home's 75-gallon gas tank. SS would be a good possibility; if
not this year, then next.
Remember, this motor home would be borrowed for a weekend, so I wouldn't want
to make any permanent "changes", nor would I want to carry lots of tower
sections on its roof...

Almost a 50/50 split between ssb/cw qso's.
Very interesting contest. Jim, N3BB, and I did another one of our 2
man multiops. Jim pounded the brass while I was the phone op.
It is very interesting reading the comments and seeing the propagation
differences in areas that are as close as 200 miles.
10m Not a big band for us. I'm not sure when/if the band opened here,
but we weren't around when it happened. I checked the band religiously
throughout the entire contest but didn't hear much at all.
The white noise keep me wondering if the antennas were still up.
15m Again, not much here. I don't have any data from our log and the
numbers weren't memorable, so tough to talk about where the q's came from.
We did have a few JA's in w/Jim having a mini-run at +/- midnight local.
20m This was THE BAND for us. A definite "7-11 band" - open 24 hours
a day. Very nice rates with many hours of 100+ on both CW and SSB. Great
CW opening from 0200 - 0530Z. We could run very big rates here, both
stateside and DX. After Jim's big CW runs I had 1 1/2 - 2 hours of near
100 hrs SSB working Europe and Asiatic Russians over the pole. This band
helped us and hurt us as it was difficult leaving piles of 5 pointers to
go work a mult, etc.
40m Jim says he felt like the VOA during our sunrise CW runs. Had stations
from JA, central asia and Pacific calling in on our run freqs.
80m/160m 1 European on 80m (SSB). Heard a JA on 80 (CW) but he no hear us.
My highlight on these bands was moving an XE from 80 to 160. 'Nuff said.
Equipment held out fine. However, we didn't realize that CT 9.1x didn't
support an IARU zone checklist. Somehow, we didn't scramble to do a manual
sheet and this mental block probably accounted for our missing some easy zones.
I'm just getting back into the hobby after a 10 year break so I'm not even
sure where we are in the sunspot cycle-after our 20m experience I'm really
unsure!
