In spite of crummy conditions, and being the eternal optimist, I
found a bright spot in the 10 meter contest. With the cold rain
pouring outside, and the house unusually quiet with my wife and
2 of the 3 children out of town, (well, the Quiet was OK!), I
casually tuned up and down the band using my 40M beam to
make a few random contacts. There was a small pile-up on an
HK3 station, and he was doing a good job working through them.
Some "operator" kept yelling YANKEEE LEEEMA ...
YANKEEEE LEEEMA... in the pileup. No call, just
YANKEEE LEEEMA ....
Being the nosy S.O.B. that I am and thinking there's a story in
there someplace, I stopped to observe. After a few minutes,
the YANKEE LEEMA just started a continuous string of
YANKEEE LEEEMA, YANKEEE LEEMA, YANKEEE LEEEEMA,
almost without regard to whether the HK3 was working anyone
or not. Finally, the HK3 heard our "operator" and said:
"the Yankee Lima, you're 59 ###."
The YANKEEEE LEEEEMA came back and actually gave
his full call and the report. The HK3, God Bless His Soul,
said "Roger Roger Yankee Leeema, and tell the Net
Control you're in the log with a good contact!!"
I really thought I would die! Life is One Great Big Hoot!

I have been using the HDR-300 for about 6 years. It turns a TH6, a 40-2CD
2-el 40, and a few long-boom VHF yagi's.
It took only 2 years before I had to replace the 1/4" key that prevents
the platform from turning on the rotor shaft. After that it's down hill.
At this point the shaft no longer has a true key shaft, therefore the new
key is loose from the start.
Since my rotor shaft, platform, and the large inner gear were worn
from these 1/4 keys trying to take the load from all that metal up
there that is trying its best to twist it off, I was looking at a
VERY large repair bill, about 1/2 of the cost of a new one.
Since I didnt have much to loose, I welded the shaft to the inner gear,
That took care of that problem, then welded a Torque lock to the bottom
of the platform. The torque lock has a 1/4 in key in it to prevent it
from slipping and the compression from the torque lock keeps it tight
against the shaft. I did replace the shaft though.
By the way, if I remember correctly, the potentiometer is a 3 turn pot
and if it is installed correctly you probably cant damage it unless your
way-way past the stops.
