KN6OX is looking for a fd operation that he can visit and perhaps
participate in near Plano, TX. I think that's near Dallas. Excuse my
K5 geography, but I'm cowboy disadvantaged.
Steve is a phone operator, recently retired from Pacific Bell, and
recently hired by MCI. He will be attending a school of some sorts near
(or maybe in) Plano.

Here's a subject that should be good for a few days...
Has anyone noticed that the Antennas & Accessories column in CQ Magazine
by W8FX really seems to be the Software Review column? Either that or it
is the New Product Review column? Or the "I will print your press
release here" column.
Seems with all the interesting antennas and antenna-smart people in the
world, there would be someone who could actually write a column on
ANTENNAS! This would free up W8FX to do what he really seems to prefer,
writing about software.
As the beer commercial says, "Wouldn't it be great?"

On a more serious antenna note.
In June 94 CQ Magazine, World of Ideas column by K4TWJ, there is an
interesting antenna given the name "El Toro."
It is basically a 1/4-wave of 450 ohm open wire fed against ground.
K4TWJ writes:
"Rather than using a single wire "worked against ground" (like a 1/4 wave
vertical), it is made of ladder line with ground connected to one
conductor. This simple step raises the antenna's signal radiation efficiency
from 20 to 60 percent."
Why is this so? What does 20 to 60 percent increase in "efficiency" mean in
actual signal improvement? And why, if it is so effective, have we not
heard more about making verticals this way?
Follow up question. I have a 1/4-wave vertical for 160. Would it work
better if I built it as an El Toro???
