I agree. When I first got my FT-1000, I was shocked at how little audio
gain it had, but thought it was just a mismatch with the Radio Shack
headphones I was using. $55 later, I had myself a pair of Yaesu YH-77ST
headphones -- but they made only a minimal improvement. The radio had to
go back to the factory for something else shortly afterwards, so I
specifically called this situation to Yaesu's attention. Their response:
"The audio level via head phones is normal".
C'mon, guys; I've spent years crawling into receivers to pull weak signals
out of the noise, and this ain't "normal" -- certainly not for a radio in
this price/performance class. Further, I don't think "hooking up a small
stereo amp to the headphones" (K0GU's solution) is an acceptable way to
deal with the problem; you shouldn't have to hook up extra boxes and wires
to a radio in this class to get "normal" performance out of it. (One can
but dream what Drake would have done with the technology in the '1000. . .)

As I sit here wearing my wrist brace and with wrist pads all over my
work area ... if you get wrist pads, remember that you are not
supposed to keep your wrists on the pads while you're typing --
they're just for resting. Otherwise, you'll get carpal tunnel
syndrome AND wrist rash ... ;-)

Well, I finally got onto Internet...Thanks to Bob, N6TV's NCJ article in
Jan '94 for the First-Timer's Guide to Internet.
The WPX test started out SLOW!! I thought there would be no way in
surpassing the old (1981) W9 record. Boy, did things change! The old
record was overtaken by bedtime Saturday nite.
The old record: K9RX 1,095,252
The new one: WE9V 2,653,152 (at KS9K)
Also, Mike, N0BSH, operated the 40M posistion at KS9K to break Jerry's
(WB9Z) W9 record.
The old record: WB9Z 594,176 (in 1990)
The new one: KS9K 810,690 (N0BSH op)
