I disagree with this sentiment. The meaning of the number in the callsign is
now just your
mailing address when you first got the call. Many of people who would be
affected have moved
permanently, and they're not "portable" at all. If you want to know where they
live, copy the
section part of the exchange. Why add to the burden of those folks by
requiring them to send
extra characters? I lived for a while with G0/AA6MC, and busting pilups with
that was a lot
more difficult than it would have been had I had a simpler call.

Why treat the symptom? Portable calls cause problems for everyone, from WPX to
DXpedition district calling, to contest callsigns. We need to lobby our
legislators to work-over the FCC so we can select our own calls again. Of
course we must prohibit guys in Illinois from requesting a W5 call becuz its
shorter!

As someone who is affected by this to a great degree, I find myself adding
/7 to my callsign in quite a few contests. In the CQWW, it really makes no
difference since I am still in zone 3, but in the ARRL DX contests, I find
that I can attract more attention if I sign /7 (who wants to work just
another 6?). I would not even think of operating in the California QSO
Party without signing /7 - confusion would reign supreme otherwise. If the
FCC would get with it and allow us to pick out our own calls, I would try
to snap up K7XO immediately - then everyone would be happy. Despite the
rule change some years ago, the call areas do not seem to be homogenized
enough yet so that they are still significant. I will be signing /7 this
coming weekend. Good luck.

I think that we should force anyone with a KE4 prefix to be a Frank from
Alabama. That way everyone would only have to copy my prefix to know my name
and state... Just kidding guys. Please no rotten tomatoes or email

I agree with "Why treat the symptom?"......
Maybe those who want us "displaced" calls to sign portable just need
to LISTEN!!!! and record the information sent instead of "ASSUMING"....
I'm sorry, its a bit more challenging to listen:-)
