Just got a hold of the "latest" PED program and Norton Utilities has
found that it has the virus "Maltese Amoeba". The version of McAfee
SCAN that I have (8.6V93) did not find it. The date associated with this
version of PED is 9/2/93 and it is 34795 bytes.
Has anyone else seen this? Norton's antivirus repair utility was unable
to fix it.

This is a false alarm. Contact Symantec for a bug-fix release on your
anti-virus software. NAV detected Maltese Amoeba in several programs, the most
common being PKWare's new release of PKZIP, v2.04.
Just to make sure, I just ran SCAN 9.17 V106 on PED.EXE (also 34795, 9/2/93)
and detected nothing.

Many of you have sent in your Sprint logs via E-Mail or with a diskette,
but there are still some stations who used software for the contest and
did not send in a diskette.
The Sprint contest is one of the most thoroughly checked contests around.
About 75 to 80 percent of the information in the logs is verified. As you
can imagine, this is a lot of work!! However, you can help out by supplying
your log via electronic media whenever possible. Many of the top ten
stations use paper during the contest, but support the log checking process
by entering their log on a computer after the contest.
Your log can be sent in most any ASCII form. The .PRN file from NA works
just fine as does the LOG.DAT file from my program. The main requirement
is for their to be no more than one line of data for each QSO and have
the information in columns looking somewhat like the standard log sheet.
You can even save yourself some postage as your entry can consist of a
diskette and a summary sheet. If you are entering you log after the
contest, you can enclose your original log and if I find a typing
mistake, it will not be counted against you.
About 80 percent of the logs received were done on computer. Please do
your part to increase the accuracy of the results and decrease the amount
of time that Rick and I need to take away from my family to administer this
contest.

Ed,
I ran the program through F-Prot Version 2.09d and it found
no viruses. F-Prot is specifically supposed to be able to
find the Maltese Amoeba virus, but the scan proved negative.
Anybody know exactly what the Maltese Amoeba virus is supposed
to do? According to the F-Prot documentation, it is an encrypted
virus that contains the message:
AMOEBA virus by the Hacker Twins (C) 1991
This is nothing, wait for the release of AMOEBA II-The universal
infector, hidden to any eye but ours! Dedicated to the University
of Malta-the worst educational system in the universe, and the
destroyer of 5X2 years of human life.

This coming weekend, as all readers of this forum surely are aware, marks the
REAL opening of contest season with the California QSO Party. For this event,
I spent all day Sunday driving down dirt roads and fire trails to finally
locate an absolutely KB location at the highest point of the ridgeline
separating Lake and Colusa Counties. Now if I can solve my antenna problem,
I'll be passing out 2 multipliers on each first contact, giving the exchange
COL/LAK. These are both rare counties, and I would be surprised if anybody
else is on from either one.
My question is how best to put up a push-up mast. I have done it several times
in the past, but never satisfactorily. I have tried pushing it straight up
while helpers hold guy wires, and once I even managed to spring one up from the
horizontal fully extended (it only had a Butternut beam at the top). This time
I will be trying to get a Cushcraft A3 up in the air--by myself. I have a 5
section, 50' [nominal length] push-up mast. My current plan is to just toss
the last section, because it is too weak, and go for a 40' mast. The best idea
I can come up with is as follows:
My fantastic site (located on a ridgeline just about a mile from the KA6WWJ
repeater site) already has a 2-section, 20' mast firmly installed with 3 wire
guys at both the 10 and 20 foot points. I'll take that mast down, put a pulley
at the top, then put it back up. Then, put the 40' mast together with the A3
at the end. I plan on attaching a wire at the 30' point, and running it over
the pully on the mast already at the site. Then (you guessed it) I winch the
mast up to about a 60 degree angle with the wire over the pully before grabbing
a guy and pulling it up to the vertical by hand. Has anybody ever tried this
before? I did an experiment at home Saturday to try this and everything went
great until the wire I had holding the pulley broke and mast with antenna came
down directly on my head. I spent the rest of the day fixing the broken
elements on the beam. The head still hurts. If this isn't the optimal way of
getting one of these masts in the air, what is? Any suggestions would be
warmly appreciated.

Oh, I was so confused.
I replied to Ed, K1TR's article.
Is that a realy *FALSE ALARM* ?
PED408I.EXE was checked by some free virus scan program before release.
The check program is not complete or any scan programs are imcomplete forever.
(There will be new type viruses always)
Anyhow, please stop to use ped408i.exe now and we'll check it as possible
as we can.
Mas found the bug that ped40xi did not run with SBv1.5 so will release the
new one with *27*pile-ups with SBpro soon. (This will be checked as carefully
as possible)
He has been developing the Voice-PED. The proto type virsion creates 4 PH
pile-ups. But still there are many difficulties like how to create different
voices for each callers, how to off-tune the voice(high tone/ low tone)
etc. If you have any interests on this VOICE-PED or any programming ideas

Thanks to everyone who joined in the Salmon Run. This was the third year
that the contest has been sponsored by the Western Washington DX Club and
we had a great turn out (even with 10 meters being totally dead!).
The scoring is as follows:
SSB QSOs = 2 points
CW QSOs = 3 points
Novice/Technician CW QSOs = 6 points
The same station may be worked for QSO points on each band, SSB
and CW. Portables and mobiles may be worked for QSO credit in
different counties.
Washington Counties (39) count as multipliers - once on each mode
regardless of bands for 78 total multipliers (Now that would be a
CLEAN SWEEP!)
QRP Bonus: Multiply score x 3
Low Power Bonus: Multiply score x 2
A package of Portlock Smoked Salmon supplied by Port Chatham Packing of
Seattle to the highest score in each DX country, and each U.S. call
