New Contest Rating System

            The WA0RJY Contest Rating System
                      Western USA
                 Summer 1993 Standings

Here is the first WA0RJY Contest Rating System Standings. These
results include the standings of all contesters in the Western
USA (Call Areas 6 and 7). In essence, everyone in the 6th and
7th call districts is competing against everyone else in the 6th
and 7th call districts - hopefully a relatively even playing
field propagation-wise (though not perfect).

The contests that contributed to these ratings are the 1991 CQWW
Phone and CW, 1992 WPX Phone and CW, 1992 Sweepstakes Phone and
CW, and the 1992 ARRL DX Contests Phone and CW (the 1991 CQWW
scores were used as these are the most recent results available).

1,202 scores from these contests are included in the final
database.

As new scores are published the WA0RJY List will be updated with
the newest results. If I get ambitious I'll add additional
contests to the pool of scores - suggestions for appropriate
contests would be appreciated.

Points are accumulated in a very simple manner - one rating point
is awarded for every Western USA opponent (regardless of class -
high power, low power, QRP, single band, assisted, etc.) that was
clobbered, thrashed, defeated, or trounced in one of the scoring
contests! For instance, if W7XYZ's score was better then 158
other 6th and 7th call area scores in the 1992 Phone Sweepstakes
- then he is awarded 158 points for his effort. Simple.

The Sweepstakes offered the best point opportunity - 243 in CW
and 222 in SSB to the first place station. The ARRL DX was next,
172 SSB and 171 CW. Then CQWW 117 SSB and 108 CW. And the runt
of the litter was WPX with only 76 SSB points and 45 CW points to
the top finisher.

I have included the top 30 overall finishes (regardless of power
or "assistance" - but no multi-ops!). Separate lists of the top
SSB, CW, Low Power, QRP, and Single Band scores are also
included. Some scores can be counted in more than one category
(e.g. a 20 meter CW QRP score will be included in the scorer's
overall, CW, low power, QRP, and 20 meter single band totals).

This system is not perfect. I don't know what to do with guest
operators. So I ignore them. W6ABC and W6ABC (op W6XYZ) are
considered to be entirely separate entries. If either of them
score enough to place on a list - they are there. But I haven't
combined scores for stations with guest ops or for contesters who
go somewhere else to guest op. Opinions on how to handle these?
Should the station get the points or the operator? Or both?

Also contesters in the new "Assisted" classes are thrown in with
the rest in these standings.

And the WA0RJY List tends to reward the active contester much
more then the "Great Contester". Those who consistently enter
contests and send in their scores are going to rack up a lot of
points in this system. A classic example is W7QN who sent in
scores for all 8 contests - respectable but never real big scores
- and ended up 11th on the Overall List! And even more amazing
WA0RJY who never comes close to N7TT's scores is sitting just
above him in the standings!

Will there be an Eastern USA list? Central USA? Hopefully, but
they won't be called the WA0RJY List! Someone in those parts of
the country will have do the clerical work (spreadsheet and
database).

Comments, questions, corrections, etc. are most welcome!
