Put a "D" cell ( 1.5volts ) in series with a 2 ohm resistor and a digital ammeter ( Fluke or whatever set to measure current ) between the minus HV and Chassis.

Compare readings.

Quoting Jim <jimw7ry@gmail.com>:

Its most likely mechanical.

Corrosion builds up between the washers on the studs of meter. Both on the inside and outside. I've also hears of instances where it can be the meter movement itslef with a bad connection on the band or adjusting mechinisem.

Seems to me the meter movement is about 150 ohms.

The plate current meter in my SB-220 has gone flaky. R1, R2, R3 and the zener diode are fine. Sometimes, I can tap on the meter and it will come to life. Using something like a Fluke 87, what should the continuity across the meter measure ? Just want to determine if this is a mechanical problem or electrical problem.
