It all depends on the transformer specs., a good example is the 
yaesu FL-7000 which has a transformer designed for 220vac on
the primary. Most have 240v service today (ours is consistently 248)
 so if they run it say at 240v the transformer will eventually cook. This is 
why that N4 guy who fixes FL7000 insists on wiring it to 120, to save the 
transformer. I would just run a large variac down to 220 and end up with even 
more headroom..So its just a matter of knowing if your transformer is for 220 
pri or not is all.
