But it's not practical for hams to do that in their home workshops.  Grounding 
straps and anti-static mats, yes. I'll put an anti-static mat on my shopping 
list. 

Conductive floor in the shack area is not going to happen. :-)

 When you get really serious about static control, you make the floor 
conductive and require all
 personnel to wear heel straps. Standard procedure at HP microwave instrument 
production areas.
 Static damage costs real money.
