I have a Galaxy 2000 -- worked great when I last fired it up, about 12 years ago! One of those "round tuits"! Mark AA6DX

Not sure why, I only started working there 39 years later..
Will ask though.

FYI Alpha did produce a water cooled tube amp back in 70'
See https://www.alpharfsystems.com/?p=1387
There is probably a good reason they stopped..

Why 11M? Don't you remember the GLA1000 with a whole bank of sweep tubes,
through 10.
I don't know what the IM products were but back then, it "seemed" to work
well.

I bought a Galaxy 2000 when I first got my general ticket. It sat
gathering dust on the consignment shelf at the old Amateur Radio Supply in
Seattle and no wanted it so I made a low ball offer and got it. It actually
worked great and burned out the resistor in my Heath Cantenna. After the
factory tubes went soft I bought a set of ten (sweep tubes were still cheap
then) from the local RCA distributor but it never worked right again. Some
tubes would run bright red, others no color. I think WRL was gone by then
but I didn't know about matched tubes anyway. I wish I had it now. It would
just look nice sitting on the shelf.

About 20 years ago I paid $100 for a 13 tube distributed amp with 13 almost
new (16 hours on the paperwork) 8122's which was one of the best buys in my
experience.

Since I had retrieved the NCL-2000 factory test and matching jig at the 1992
IRS auction I matched and sold pairs on Fleabay at some ridiculous prices.

The massive PS has been repurposed and the all SS driver stage with its own
PS which requires only 0 dBm input for 20W from 100 kHz to 200 mHz has many
uses.

Does not need neutralization, it is a distributed amplifier. It is not
tuned for any particular frequency
and broad band. These were common until the development of broadband solid
state amplifiers.
I had a 2MHz to 200MHz distributed amplifier some time ago.

Hello Hawk,

To clear a Fault 99 on an Alpha 87A amplifier with a PC connected to serial
port:

Amp plugged into AC but not turned on.

Type in the following commands and enter them for each new line. You can
also
copy and paste the entire string of commands (include EXT ON at beginning
thru
SF at end) into the Hyperterminal window, put cursor at END of the list and
hit
enter. They will be sent in sequence to the 87A.

EXT ON
W B71A FF
W B71B FF
W B71C FF
W B71D FF
W B71E FF
W B71F FF
W B720 FF
W B721 FF
W B724 FF
W B725 FF
W B726 FF
W B727 FF
W B728 FF
W B729 FF
W B72A FF
W B72B FF
W B72C 0C
W B72D B5
W B7E0 FF
W B7E1 FF
W B7E2 FF
W B7E3 FF
W B7E4 FF
W B7E5 FF
W B7E6 FF
W B7E7 FF
HF
SF

When you type HF and SF they should show all 00.
Unplug the 87A from the mains power for 30 seconds. This resets the
microprocessor.

Once you have cleared the Fault 99, turn on the amp and the original fault
may show up.

 Hello Guy?s

I know that there are a lot of knowledge on this reflector on different
amplifiers.

I got in my hand an 87A with hardfailer 99 - which mean that the amp is
not starting at all.

Before Calling the Alpha..guy?s I like to ask you here on the reflector
to give me some info how to
solve this. I have no idea what type of fault it was Before it shut down.

The previous owwner do not remeber the fault sign on the LED?s.

Thank You so much for take the time to read this.

Would appreciate if any have a solution......

However at some point all new Al-1200 and Al-82 amps came through with these changes AFAIK....these mods were put in place to increase the efficiency of the tuned input networks. I don't know how much of an improvement it really is in the finale analysis. However, you can easily identify if YOUR amp is of the vintage where the change was made. Just look at the side wall up by the zener diodes where the input coax terminal strip is. If you see two coax cables coming from the input box then you have the updated amplifier. If your Al-1200 or 82 has only one coax from the input then it is an earlier versio
n without this change. NOTE:THIS DOES NOT PERTAIN TO THE AL-1500 !!!!!!

There is a hand-drawn input circuit change on the Ameritron website.

It is undated and doesn't state which amp it applies to. Anyone have

any info?
