Dick, with all due respect, and I admit to wearing hearing aids, I simply don't hear those loud fans that some have complained about. Is it possible that your setup is somehow amplifying the vibrations somehow? I've had cabinets, housings, etc. that have amplified vibrating equipment.

As mentioned, the SPE 2K is a very nice amp in many ways, but my problem
with them is the fans are very noisy. They use small 2" exhaust fans that
run at warp speed and it sounds like a jet engines in the shack. I don't
why SPE uses such small blower fans as there's room for larger ones. Larger
fans running at a slower speed would move the same amount of air, be
quieter, and last longer.

I am quite happy with my SPE Expert 2K-FA.

Other than working well, what this amp provides are

-Good amplifier

-antenna switch, 6.

-SWR meter.

-two switched inputs.

Thanks Ian.. I'll add it to the several versions of your board info that I
already have and use.

I know how amplifier metering works. This is a special application.

This reference, page 3 onwards, may explain what everyone means.

http://www.ifwtech.co.uk/g3sek/boards/triode/triode-manual.pdf

That is how it's done in the large majority of HF amplifiers, and in all
VHF
triode amplifiers where a well-grounded grid is essential.

Hi Jim,
Why not leave the grid grounded but, just measure the cathode and plate
currents then subtract to calculate the grid current?

Has anyone run the grid of an 8877
not connected to ground as far as DC is concerned?

I really need to meter the grid current by bypassing the
grid to ground with capacitors and several 10 ohm resistors
in order to meter grid current. Metering grid current by the
CT of the filament transformer, and the ? of the power
supply cant be done. Because the power supply ? is
  directly grounded.

Anyone had luck doing this?

  Thanks 73

I had one and I agree with all the above. It's only drawback is it
won't do legal limit on RTTY or other continuous carrier mode. After
about 5-10 seconds it overheats and drops back to MID power.

Other than that, an excellent amp. I now run an Alpha 9500 which does
not have that limitation, at about the same price but is not solid
state of course.

Very few amps will run legal limit on 100% duty cycle RTTY! I don't think
I'd want to
pay for the power supply that would need.

1 amp transformer is only $400.00. My power supplies run RTTY contests at
1500 watts no issues.
