Thomas, you can save a lot of thermal stress on the tube and other parts by
tuning with high speed cw dots instead of a steady carrier. Most radios
now have cw keyers built in so you can easily do that.
With a dot to space ratio of one, the meter readings will be about half and
the heating will be about half as well.
Many of us don't even use ALC; we adjust the drive level manually while
watching grid current.
