One of my earliest acquaintances with an old tyme contester and dxpeditioner
(now SK) ran a 4-1000 at 6 kv and 1adc key down. With 5 elements at 150 ft
he could demonstrate the ability to pretty much work anybody, anywhere,
anytime, long paths included. Yeah, it ran red but he used the good socket
and chimney plus a decent blower.

I have heard some REALLY "olde tymers" say that they ran a 6L6 with like
1200 volts on the plate. They had to send CW really fast because a short
"dah" turned the plate red hot and a long "dah" melted it!

I used to run 813's well past showing color. They were downright glowing,
yet I never had any problems with them. Of course back then they were $5 to
free and "we" as in most hams I knew running them, never worried about
pushing a tube "a little"
