I think you are thinking of the 3CX1200D7. I was talking about the much newer 
but little used 3CX1500D7 which was supposed seems to basically be an instant 
on 8877 and uses the existing 3-500/3CX1200A7 socket.

Regarding the swap to an 8877 or pair of 3-500s, surely the biggest issue there 
will be the filament xformer. I would think this swap could be done for $300 or 
less if one already has the tube(s) to be used.
