Thanks for the replies, fellows.

It seems clear that the problem with this amp is that it needs higher plate 
voltage.  Probably not cost effective to buy a new transformer, and doubtful 
whether it would fit.   Suppose I'd also need to upgrade the diode board as 
well.  Maybe the best thing would be to figure out a way to connect the power 
supply from my Drake L-7 to this amp.

Anyhow, I'll be sure to keep the plate current to less than 400ma.
