| I recently acquired a used Ameritron QSK-5 for use with a solid-state amp.
In preparation for use, I noted that the RCA control jacks were loose. In
the event the KEY 2 connector become loose, hot switching will occur since
the QSK-5 depends on the cabinet for the return ground leads. Relying on a
metal cabinet for control and RF connections is a poor design and
construction habit. These connectors need their own conductors for the
return path.
I ran #20 AWG buss wire to all the RCA jacks and bonded them to the chassis
with a solder lug and also bonded to circuit ground. I did the same on the
two of the low-level SO-239 connectors. The high-level SO-239 jacks did
have solder lugs to circuit ground.
Finally, I discarded the two-wire AC line cord, and replaced it with a
detachable, 3-wire IEC Corcom type with integral RFI filter. For those
running a QSK-5, I highly recommend making these changes.
