"Hey, thats an excellent application for an otherwise useless item, a hot knife for cutting foam." And, the old Heath electronic switch, which was used to switch inputs to the single channel scopes, is a perfect box for the power supply to operate the foam cutting tool, along with the nichrome wire. I used that arrangement to make a foam mold for a new fiberglass wheel well for my experimental aircraft. Works nifty. I have not had any parasitics since then.
