I have a Trans World Electronics 500M with 8 Motorola MRF 454 transistor
finals. I was playing around the other night with my K2 qrp rig keying
about 8 or 9 watts into the amplifier. It amazed me how well it was working
as I was getting an easy 100 plus watts and it seemed like I was still
enjoying the qsk of the K2.

Unfortunately, I put my hand on the heat sink and it was hot. Usually on
ssb it hardly gets warm even with the occasional rag chew. I looked at the
amp meter and the collector was drawing 20 amps with no rf input. I quickly
shut things down. The next morning I popped the cover just to give a visual
inspection. There is no apparent physical damage nor burnt odor.

I put 50 or 60 watts of ssb rf into it last night and the amp easily put out
over 500 watts drawing 70 amps on peaks. But,again, once the mike was keyed
it drew 20 amps without any modulation.

I am really not much of an electronics tech but open to any advice, comments
or trouble shooting tips anyone may care to share. Or if there is a repair
service that will work on a Metron. I hate to toss it out as I seldom need
the 500 watts but its the only way I will get on 75 meters in the evening.

Meanwhile back to cw qrp with the good old K2.

Thanks for reading, Larry W8CCY

On 80m here in vk we have 3.500 to 3.7 es 3779 to 3.8 dx window. yes it is a
jump cw to ssb " but' i switch in a extra matching network at the phasing
box, this is not perfect as the phasing line r to short. but a much better
method than to try to match at the rig end..i use triangle phase array.. 3
by 1/4 verticals wid 120 radial per vertical..

Ever think about a Carolina Windom?

My dummy load is a good match for 50 ohms as well, does not get out good
though:-)

My manual says the idle current should be 4 amps...If not, to check
adjustment of R3 (bias adjustment)..If the idle current can not be set
to about 4 amps (.625 vdc on the bases of the 454's) if not then to
check the Q1/Q2 bias circuit operation...Let me know if you need more
info. I have the complete manual ( a photocopy, that cost me $65 from
Trans-world)..Sounds to me like an adjustment should do it for you, as
the amps seem to be working. Current should be 45 to 60 amps on voice peaks.

ARRL did a rather thorough test of a number of commercial tuners several
years ago. They tested them on 160-10m and with loads well below and above
50 ohms. I recall that several were extremely lossy on 160 with severe
loads. The article is on the ARRL web site and can be found with a search if
you are an ARRL member. I don't have the link here.

Hi Allan,

Well, an ATU (properly designed) will help keep your harmonics / spurious
signals from being radiated --- AND it'll add front-end selectivity to your
receiver, for starters...

"...To each his / her own", though! Hi Hi.

What a fantastic forum. Before my first post I hear from Chuck W6RD, who
obviously is familiar with the Metron amps, with the fix for my problem.
Thank you so much Chuck and the others who responded to my post. A simple
adjustment of the bias was all it took. Chuck gave me the confidence to
give it a try. Hard to believe the idle current could make such a dramatic
jump. Think I will stick to the occasional ssb usage.

These ham radio forums have sure enhanced my enjoyment of the hobby. Can't
imagine ham radio without the internet support. A marriage made in heaven?

Given: SB-220 240VAC, fully modded with Harbach and Measures addons.
STILL trying to get outside the ham bands for MARS...

What I would really like is to have a 6 tap bandswitch
set for

2.2mhz
3.2mhz
4.0mhz
5.0mhz
7.2mhz and
14.0mhz

actually, I would not mind adding a couple more but that will do.

however, while Harbach has the bandswitch wafer, I do not know what it
would take to set the taps to these freqs - IF it could even be done.
I am sure that I will have to add another plate coil for 160m.

so, assuming the above to be a formidable task...
I wonder how difficult it would be to add a 160m position to the
present bandswitch wafer or to add the Harbach SW-100 --

Also, I have RMeasure's mss on adding the 160m to the SB-220
http://www.somis.org/add-160m.html
while there is someone selling a two page document with parts list on
ebay for $10.00 .

which is the better way?
has anyone done this?

Advice please?

Hi Steve,

I suggest looking to see if there is a local PCB fabrication shop in your
area. If there is, ask to talk to their production manager. They probably
will let you have a bunch of scrap/cutoffs. It's a win-win for them as they

don't have to pay a scrap dealer to recycle and haul it away. Tell them you

want some FR-4/G-10 material.

A Google search would probably work well.

Hi Again Bob, Et Al,

If you click back onto my Flickr website again, you'll see that I've added a
scanned copy of the transmatch circuit ("...back by popular demand!", Hi)
which inspired me here in the construction of mine...

http://www.flickr.com/photos/15888272@N05/3287811310/

I apologize for the poor quality of the scan --- still, I'm sure that anyone
interested in building their own version of the SPC transmatch will readily
get the gist of it (any queries as to specifics may be directed to me...I'll
be only too happy to assist).

Let's see some pix of OTHER homebrewed creations in the matter of
transmatches! It just blows me away, the amount of BIG $$$ that some
manufacturers command for commercial "appliance" versions of these things.
These rigs are probably THE easisest pieces of equipment for to-day's
Amateurs to build that can see daily use in the shack --- heck, they don't
even have to be shielded!

I'd wager that most (if not all) of the parts for one of these rascals could
easily be purchased dirt cheap at nearby Hamfests...and EVERY OT worth his
salt has a treasure trove of parts stashed away that are just ACHING to be
put to good use. All you have to do is ask! Most Hams are more than happy to
oblige, knowing that their gems are going to a good home in this way...

So come on, all you non-builders out there: what are you waiting for...?!
Dust off that old Weller iron, and get to work --- you won't regret the
experience, OR the fruits of your labour...!!!
