I think I saw them at good old Harbor Frieght for a few bucks, they looked
to be well made.

A battery disconnect is a common item at stores that cater to antiques, 
RVers, or anyone who stores a vehicle for a length of time but leave the 
battery in place.

I am going to put a switch across a 12v auto battery to interrupt power in 
case of whatever.  Should I break the circuit between the negative terminal 
and ground or between the positive terminal and the load?
