A while ago I used a modest 12v power supply with a "small generator". It
buzzed and hummed a bit which got me thinking and eventually I put a 'scope
on the generator output. Any resemblance to a sine wave would have been a
coincidence!

While we are on the subject, do you check your generator with a true rms
meter? Some small generators I have had to use have more of a triangular
waveform and 'ordinary' meters are not calibrated for that.
I understand that it is important for heaters in particular to run at the
correct voltage, preferably within a few percent, which is not easy from
small generators operating into a widely fluctuating load.
Does it bother anyone?
