Several years ago, when I was running 375 watts on 6M mobile, my wife and I
drove to a rare grid-square here in Montana to pass the grid out during a
contest.
We came upon a bar out in the middle of nowhere and we stopped to get a
coke. While my wife was in the bar I called CQ. Very soon she came
bursting out and yelled: "Get out of here, Quick!".
Well, while she was in the bar, she heard me calling CQ on the speakers in
the gambling machines. She couldn't hear the exact words, but she
understood the cadence.
The reason she ran out so quickly was not so much hearing me, but that
several of the gambling machines started playing music and sirens and giving
out big jackpots.
She said that the bartender was just standing behind the bar with his mouth
hanging open.
That was, for him, an expensive CQ.
I've often wondered if I couldn't pull that trick with the help of someone
inside playing the machines.
