One thing for sure, you can sure kill the voltage regulation 
with an autotransformer.
 Be sure you haven't hurt the no load to full load HV 
regulation. Keep in mind we can't measure the voltage sag 
from poor regulation with a typical AC voltmeter, it has to 
be measured by watching the HV meter or with a peak detector 
meter if you look at regulation on the mains.
