Thanks to those who responded to my query about the cathode connection on a thoriated tungsten filament tube! The obvious answer is that if I don't use some means to balance out the AC that's heating the filament, then the filament will be contributing a 60Hz hum to the signal, and that's something I DON'T want! 73, George T.
