LOL

My feeling is that amps ARE necessary in our hobby. Earlier this year in
Malta our DXpedition team took along an ALS-600S. Without that amp, our
participation in the ARRL International SSB DX contest would have been
almost fruitless. Most of the stations we worked were also running power,
but a few were barefoot.

IMO the real problem with excessive power is during contests where a really
big signal covers about 5KC. No antenna or rig can be selective enough to
deal with a signal like that while trying to operate on a nearby frequency.

Maybe a new sport could be developed to hunt down these offending amps and
publish their location. It may not help getting them shut down, but the
owners would likely not appreciate the notoriety. :)

Actually, I think that is a very bad idea. There are many times when 100w
just won't cut it. The problem - as has been alluded to by several other
posters - is behavioral, not technical.

If you want a technical solution, then make it illegal to ever transmit a
signal that is more than, say, 12 db above ambient noise on the receiving
end. Regardless of power or antenna. Impossible to enforce? Sure. So is an
arbitrary power limit.

I am curious why so many anti-power, anti-amp people participate in an
amplifier mailing list.
