NEMA ML3 is a 125/250 3 wire midget twist lock which is two wire with
neutral at center. P stands for plug and R for receptacle.
The standard NEMA 6-20 250V 3 wire receptacle is 2 poles with ground. The
configuration is different.
Assuming that this is a 20A circuit, the NEMA type 10-20 would be a more
commonly available alternative. This is a two pole 3 wire non-grounding
configuration. Twist lock is L10-20.

If you are retrofitting a wall outlet, be sure the wire used as neutral is
connected to the neutral buss at the breaker box. If they are bonded, it
doesn't matter. If they are separate, it makes a big difference.
Another alternative is to run a new 3 wire + ground branch and cord, but
then how the amplifier is wired internally comes into play.

I have no problem understanding the discussion so far, but I have a wiring
question I'd like to resolve before connecting my AM-6155 VHF amp. Power
connector on the amp is, I believe, an ML3-R (it fits)which should be used
in a 3 Pole, 3 Wire 125/250 Volt, Non grounding configuration. My confusion
is what kind of connector do I put on the cord? Can I run it on 125, or do I
need 250? Is center a ground or a Neutral? Is anyone familiar with this?

AMEN! You have to use a 4 wire cord if you intend on having access to 120
and 240 vac from the same source. NEC rules does not allow using a neutral
for a hot, plus you need a ground. The NEC actually had a change here
recently about new stoves, etc requiring a seperate ground if I recall.
