Hi All,
I have an Autek RF-1 and have had no difficulty with determining
the sign of j - just follow the instructions and note Z at the
frequency of interest - then increase frequency by a small
amount.
If the Z reading becomes lower, then the reactance of the system
being tested is capacitive, e.g., the antenna is too short.
The converse situation applies.
(The L and C readings are not used in the above application.)
However, neither the RF-1 or MFJ 259 are laboratory instruments
and their readings are intended more for guidance than accuracy.
The MFJ is easier to use but is more expensive and heavier than
the RF-1.
Oh for a GR 1606 bridge. <G>
