Normal AM and SSB are ways of modulating RF directly from an audio signal. Adding a digital encoding step (and corresponding decoding in the rx) allows us to use what we know about voice signals and how they are perceived by the brain to selectively remove information from the signal to reduce bandwidth without damaging (perceived) fidelity.

And keep our QSO's all to our selves leaving out the hams in 3/4 of the world that can't afford the technology.

Just like the first 20 years of SSB!

Variable bit rate, low dynamic range, digitized audio doesn't take much bandwidth
or CPU power. Tokenized speech takes even less bandwidth but more CPU and it can
sound like the actual speaker if you've got samples.

Joe Bob speaks into his microphone. His
computer sends 'vi-joebob', your computer grabs, from the database,
"yeah ohhhhh mmmmmmm I tried me some of that viagra stuff and it's like hitting with a corked
bat, let me tell you is that a big 10-4. By the by how's your old lady, break!"

See how efficient it can be!
