Let me try to move this discussion to a more, er, constructive plane. A possible solution to the problem of bandwidth vs. quality is to develop of form of digital audio encoding that employs a data compression scheme similar to the variable bit rate method that's used in some forms of mp3 encoding. The idea is that intelligent data compression can take advantage of voice characteristics to minimize the data rate necessary to transmit BC-quality audio. Since the signal is digital, ultra-high efficiency class-E amplification could be used. A 1.5 KW digital signal would be potent indeed -- far more so than a puny 375-watt carrier AM signal. Of course you guys running BC-610's and SX-28's would have to upgrade your transmitting and receiving equipment. Speaking of CW (somebody did), the ARRL proposal mentions that the bandwidth of a CW signal with 5 ms rise and fall times is about 150 Hz. Such a signal is good for at least 60 wpm, and since the bandwith limit for CW is 200 Hz., the Ted McElroys among us can harden up the keying a bit and go even faster. -- 73, Vic, K2VCO Fresno CA http://www.qsl.net/k2vco
