 Not all vacuum relays are all that fast. The HC-1 and RJ-1A are fast because they have only one movable contact -- i. e., they are SPDT. DPDT and 3PDTvacuum relays are comparable in speed to conventional relays.

I've never seen a picture of how the typical small ITT/Jennings/Kilovac relays work, and they're too rare over here to justify taking one apart... besides, it would let all the good stuff out.
