I measured the primary current this weekend.
With the amp in an idle condition (not keyed) voltage is 5k
and plate current is virtually zero - transformer is drawing very
low current
With the amp keyed but no drive (zsac) plate voltage is 5kv
and current is 150 ma or so - transformer current is less than
10 amps and the ac current meter dosent measure this low
current very well, but its certainly less than 10 amps.
When I send a cw signal to the amp (20 watts or so) the
amp puts out less than 500 watts and transformer ac current
goes to 60 amps.....intermittently ... Plate current is less than
300 ma and still 5kv
Where is all that power going? Its not going into the tube. The
caps and bleeders appear normal and the rectifiers have been
replaced just for troubleshooting.

Is it possible that I need a choke input vs a capacitive filter?
The breaker has been replaced as well
