I'm thinking about outfitting my contest station with 6 amps, one for each
HF band. I want amps that will put out 1500 watts reliably, and that are
cheap :-)
One option appears to be the Dentron MLA-2500. They are available for
~$500. It appears that it might be possible to re-tube them with either the
3CX800A or the 4CX800A, probably with a transformer upgrade, and get them to
put out 1500 watts. Then again, maybe I am dreaming and the power supply
and output circuits would not deal well with 1500 watts :-)
Maybe 3 tube Alpha 76PA's are a better option - I already have one and it is
rock solid. At $1100 or so, they might be cheaper than the modified
MLA-2500's anyway.
What would your suggestion be for a low cost, reasonably reliable amp that
will do 1500 watts out in contest use?
Thanks much!
