Isn't the idea of a glitch resistor to act as a fuse ? Don't you want it to
open on a glitch?
Absolutely not!
The purpose of the glitch resistor is to limit the energy (joules) that is
stored in the filter capacitor(s) until the primary power supply fuses/CB's can
remove power from the HV power transformer.
In several Eimac big tube data sheets there is a detailed discussion of how
to properly test for the right omage and power rating on a glitch resistor.
There are many variables, so no one value
will work on every power supply. Voltage, value of the filter capacitor, speed
of the primary fuses/CB's, and other factors must be considered in selecting the
proper value of glitch resistor. I use 50 or 100 watt units if they will fit
somewhere
in the cabinet. Every big Eimac tube has a maximum joule rating that should
never
be exceeded in order to preserve the warranty.
The bottom line is that after a glitch, no components other than the one that
caused
it are damaged, including the glitch resistor.
