Although surplus rack mount chassis, stripped of all components, are often a
good deal, the "off the shelf" Bud/Premier/etc chassis aren't cheap nor
particularly strong.
If the construction article gives mechanical dimensions and chassis layouts,
you might check a local sheet metal shop to see if they can bend and punch
you a nice 18-gauge (or maybe 16-gauge) steel chassis in their downtime.
With welded corners and a nice coat of zinc chromate, this will be far
stronger than most pre-fab chassis and not cost much. I've had local sheet
metal shops fabricate 100% custom chassis for me, for a $50 setup charge +
hourly rate. It doesn't take more than about one hour to create a custom
chassis from dimensioned drawings, if they have a good G-code programmer for
their CNC equipment. Always been very pleased with the results. And of
course, have them punch all the large holes! Nothing slows down a project
more than having to file holes for panel meters....
