For about 4 years now, we use SMPS to power our filaments :) They are under
a central Microprocessor control so we can adjust the filament (and not
only)
voltage at any time, real time, and remote if needed :) There is a
substantial saving in size, weight, and power consumption as the SMPS is
usually more efficient than a simple transformer ... However, all of this
costs extra, as you already suspect :) There is no free meal :)

cool part is -- you can tap a toroid ANYWHERE, and move the tap lead along
the toroid to fine-tune the voltage AND any stray bias voltage that you
might be picking up anywhere.
