Knew this guy in Riverside years ago -- W6CHR "Clear Channel Radio" as =
he use to say after signing his call -- had a pair of 4-65A's running =
the G2DAF (?) circuit -- the circuit where drive is used to develop =
screen voltage. Anyhow, driven with a Collins transmitter the beast put =
out 1KW -- no shit! Don't know what it sounded like, or how dirty the =
thing was -- but it put out an honest 1KW as measured on a Bird watt =
meter. Of course, the plates would go incandescent -- unbelievably =
bright -- I mean like a light bulb bright.
He kept a few spares on hand -- cuz they would melt down occasionally. =
He also had a pair of 4-1,000A using the same circuit and used the =
2X4-65A to drive that -- an easy 5,500 out as I recall.
He was always "wide," as in 100Mhz wide. Seems all the DAF'ers I've =
heard on the air over the years were on the dirty side -- but you could =
never convince them of that.
