HyGain did this a number of years ago with a CB / 10 meter amplifier called 
the "afterburner".

It wasn't very popular, since you had to run an "unearthed" station, 
however, it did work respectably.

If memory serves me well (I didn't like the amp very much, so I rarely 
worked on them / owned one) it had a single 6JT6 tube driving a pair of 
6LQ6s or something of that nature.  Maybe a flat 4 6JT6s.  Been awhile.

Anywho, the point was that a commercial venture did the voltage multiplier 
off the mains trick.  Just be careful.
