? In ancient times, I didn't either. . When I eventually sold the
S/N-1 tetrode with handles, 20db amplifier (codename "The Plywood Box"),
it used a semi-conventional vhf suppressor made with light gauge copper
wire. When I constructed S/N-2., I used stainless-steel (Ni/Cr/Fe)
shimstock in the suppressor. The second amplifier had zero bouts of
instability. The first one had occasional, stentorian, bouts of
instability. The good news is that, quite unlike the filament in the
8008/3-500Z, the filament of the 8171 is supported by a rather clever
spring-loaded carousel that keeps the filament segments correctly aligned
- no matter what. I have never had a "tetrode with handles" that was
damaged by a parasite.
//note: only the power supply unit of "The Plywood Box" was constructed
with plywood. The RF unit, which sat on top of the PS unit was made from
0.125-inch 6061-T6 aluminum sheet stock plates that were fastened
together using PEM nuts.//
cheers, Jon.
