? I see no reason why a less hefty supply wouldn't work ok if you don't
object to using a tuning-pulser to tune-up. After a conversation with
Peter Dahl about the nature of hipersil cores, I went with a (potted)
3000v/1.5a Dahl 68-pounder in mine. Using a FWD, it delivered 7800vdc UL
w. SSB on an "Ahhhhh". . For CW, RTTY and QRP-SSB, switching to FWB
might be a good idea. #4 Cu wiring is advised. However, if you don't
have stiff mains to your house, a FWB and resonant-choke, is undoubtedly
the best way to go. Peter Dahl sells ready to go resonant-chokes with
matching caps. For a 8170 or 8171 on not-11m SSB/not beserko processed,
a 1.5a-rated resonant-choke from Dahl would probably suffice. note: my
8170/71 amplifier measured 27"h. by 20" square. It was self-contained
inc. the blower, and it weighed 100kg. When a friend who owned a 4-1000A
"big-boy" (with steering wheel Variac). in a six-foot rack first saw it,
he could not believe that 14-out could fit in such a small enclosure.
- good luck, Larry
