Here's an interesting figure to throw into the discussion: at that
pressure (10^-6 to 10^-7 mm of mercury) the so-called "vacuum space"
between the electrodes of a typical amateur-size transmitting tube will
contain 10^10 to 10^11 atoms of gas!
